Bill Baker was born in 1923 in Coleman, Oklahoma. The family of 11 moved to Huma
for 1 year then to Wasco, California in 1936 where he grew up and met Juanita in
elementary school. They dated in Junior High School then married in 1942 in Carson
City, Nevada. The young married couple spent 64 happy years together loving,
supporting and encouraging each other through the hard times and successful times
of their lives.
Bill entered the army and was sent to be a pilot at Morning Side College in Wisconsin
where he continued his love for playing basketball. He served in World War II under
General Patton and was decorated at the “Battle of Bastone,” the “Battle of Elb River”
and the “Battle of the Rhine River.”
After the war Bill and Juanita moved to Westmoreland in the Imperial Valley where he
owned and operated a small gas station and where his first child, Yvonne, was born in
the small attached home behind the station. He and Juanita then moved to Running
Springs where he owned and operated the famous Wagon Wheel Restaurant for 9
years. He then sold the business and began his career in Real Estate. During that
time they had another daughter, Brenda, and son, Billy, born at St. Bernardine
Hospital in San Bernardino.
Their love for the mountain community of Running Springs was the beginning of their
interest in helping the community any way they could.
Bill began his Real Estate career in developing over 2000 lots in the portion of town
now referred to as Rowco. As a salesman, later a broker, he arranged for his
company, ROWCO, to donate a corner prime lot for the first church that was built, now
known as “Running Springs Community Church.”
In the 1950’s he opened his own Real Estate office in which he controlled 80% of the
listings in the area and continued to be a proud significant part of the responsible
growth of the community of Running Springs.
In 2006 Bill sold his Real Estate office to his daughter and son-in-law, Dan and Yvonne
Teter, but continues to sell Real Estate and build new homes in the small community
of Running Springs with his son-in-law, Dan. He also continues his love for golf and
participates as a member of the Arrowhead Country Club in San Bernardino.
